Story & tradition

Rudraksha beads come from trees of the Elaeocarpus genus. Their naturally divided surface lines are called mukhis, or faces; different traditions interpret these forms in different ways.

In Shaiva practice, rudraksha is worn as a reminder of steadiness and devotion and is also strung into prayer beads for mantra repetition. Customs differ by teacher and lineage, so personal guidance should take precedence over universal rules.

If your tradition prescribes a mantra, day or method of wearing, follow the guidance of your teacher or family practice.
